Stitching a Future

When Pemphero was just a baby, life dealt her unimaginable loss. Her mother passed away while breastfeeding her. At age 12, she lost her father too. Orphaned and vulnerable, she went to live with her grandmother, unsure of what the future could hold.

Thankfully her future began to shift when, at 10 years old, Pemphero joined Malawi Children’s Mission in the first group of children to join.

In 2008, Pemphero attended the local government school while receiving daily meals, emotional support, and academic guidance from MCM. Over the next nine years, MCM became her anchor; her safe haven through the turbulence of adolescence and hardship.

After completing secondary school, Pemphero became pregnant and had no option for further education.  Many would have seen that as the end of her academic journey. MCM saw it as a pause, not a full stop.

Years later, when MCM launched its Vocational Training Program, Pemphero was invited to join. She eagerly accepted, determined to create a better life for her child and grandmother. She graduated in 2023 as part of the first tailoring cohort, earning her certificate and receiving a sewing machine to begin her journey as a businesswoman.

Although her initial group business plan was unsuccessful, Pemphero did not give up. She approached MCM’s vocational training coordinator with a bold request to pursue a microloan independently. After careful review, MCM said yes.

In November 2024, Pemphero received a $30 loan and immediately began repaying it. Month by month, stitch by stitch, she is now running her own tailoring business. She’s not just repaying a loan, Pemphero is investing in herself, her skills, and her ability to support her family.

Pemphero is proof that when we walk alongside a child through every season of life, offering support, second chances, and practical tools, they don’t just rise, they soar.
