Maize Raise 2025
Thank you to everyone who has reached out with concern, encouragement, and support. We are still assessing the full impact of USAID cutbacks on our children's lives and MCM’s programs. At the same time two alarming realities are affecting our community:
Inflation is driving up prices on everything—from tomatoes to fuel—making food less affordable.
A poor maize harvest is expected in the coming weeks due to erratic rainfall, leaving families worried about the future.
Most of our community members are subsistence farmers, relying on what they grow to feed their families. If they have extra, they sell it to buy necessities. But this year, crops dried up early, forcing families to replant multiple times—if they could afford seeds. Many couldn’t fertilize due to the cost. And, while Tropical Cyclone Judas spared major destruction, the rain may have come too late to boost yields.
What this means? From May 2025 to April 2026, families will struggle to put food on the table and the cost to purchase maize, the staple food, and other essentials will only increase. [Causes of food insecurity in Malawi.]
With your support, MCM can take action now to ensure food security and guarantee no child goes hungry. Together we can:
✅ Purchase maize immediately after harvest —in early May when prices are lowest—to distribute to 100 families when they run out of food and to sustain MCM's feeding program which serves 180 children 2 meals a day.
✅ Bulk-buy essentials now like cooking oil, sugar, and salt for the feeding program at the center and proactively address future increased expenses.
✅ Strengthen our programming to ensure no child is left hungry, by continuing to work in the community, pre-emptively assessing needs and planning for long-term food stability.
While MCM’s mission is to empower—not create dependency—hunger is a crisis that demands action. Without food, children become malnourished, miss school, and lose hope. Please know that our staff, children and their families are grateful for the past support which enabled the weekly distribution of maize possible since November. The generosity of our donors is not taken for granted.
The need is urgent. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. Together, we can prevent hunger, protect children’s health, and secure their future.
