Dear Friends of MCM,
In the 3 months since devastating rains and floods destroyed the homes of our families, cracked walls and floors in MCM’s buildings and nearly wiped out the crops, there is great news to report.
Hundreds of generous donors answered our plea for funds to rebuild and repair. Giving came in many forms from individual donations to gifts honoring a loved one. Our Global Classroom partners stepped up to organize events; Riverdale Country School’s Read-a-thon, Derby Academy’s “Seeds of Good Deeds” campaign, PS 52’s Benefit Concert, Fox Elementary’s FlapJack Fundraiser and Marshfield High School’s Girls Up Spin-a-thon. Children donated birthday money while others collected change.
With the total funds raised MCM is able to support the rebuilding and repair to all homes providing 65 children and their families shelter. Classroom walls and floors will be plastered and bathrooms renovated. The water diversion project will be implemented to redirect future flood water. Every building will receive a fresh coat of paint.
The work will take time but here is a look at what’s been initiated:
- Construction of 25 new homes is underway. The local community mobilized forming committees to prioritize the needs, hire local builders, make bricks and distribute materials efficiently. Madalistso and Dyson are pictured with their grandmother showing work in progress on their home.
- Crops were harvested early to avoid spoilage.
Thank you to our partners in the rebuilding of many lives in Malawi and and for your continued support to provide opportunity for a better future. Please take a moment to hear gratitude from MCM’s children @ A “Thank You” Song.
With Much Appreciation,
Karen Rhen Hirsh
